Karen has focused her life long artistic expression most recently with her pastel work. She aims to capture mood through simplified compositions and colour harmonies, all the while representing the familiar Ottawa Valley landscape. She enjoys experimenting with limited colour palettes and neutral tones to create a calm, inviting feeling.
An idea for a painting often comes while in nature; she is frequently hiking, cycling, skiing or foraging. She will take photographs, then return to her home studio to capture the feeling of the moment through her design process.
As her children have gotten older, Karen has been able to dedicate more time to her passion for art. She develops her craft through the hard work of constant practice and repetition. She also learns from participating in Patreon groups, watching interviews, reading, and following artists on social media.
