Primarily a weaver and fabric artist, Janis Huisman still remembers her mother’s words to her: “You’ve got too many irons in the fire!” Those words still reverberate in her head each time a new idea wanders in. Creative thoughts flood in and fight for her attention as she makes choices on how to spend her energy and resources.
The beauty of nature, from intricate textures to explosions of colour inspire her and she tries to convey these impressions into creative pieces in a few select mediums. Should it be a weaving, spinning and tapestry creation? Or fibre dying, felting, and paper making. Or will she do a water colour painting, split ash basketry, sewing, crocheting, or knitting? It seems there isn’t a creative project Janis hasn’t done–she has even tried quilting and tatting! So, it seems only fitting that she calls her studio “Too Many Irons” in honour of her mother’s assessment of her nature.
